Hampton is set to get a new national centre for abseiling and rock climbing as part of the Willis Street and Thomas Street redevelopment.

After facing a potentially bleak future, Hampton Scouts have offered to relinquish it’s Willis St and Thomas St halls in exchange for council support in developing a national centre for abseiling and rock climbing. The centre is planned to be used by scouting groups and the community.

The future of the Willis St site has been up in the air since October while Bayside City Council has been considering a proposal for the redevelopment of the surrounding precinct.

The Willis St site has been home to the Hampton 1st Scouts since 1969. Scouts Victoria Region Commissioner Michelle Grierson said initial support from the Bayside City Council has been extremely encouraging and the opening of the national centre would be a great way to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Hampton Scouts.

This is also exciting news for Hampton Street locals - being a largely sporty and active bunch, we’re always excited to hear of new and exciting developments that enhance our lifestyle.
